I walked 32 km today!

16th December 2011

I was waiting for Stijn, a Dutch guy I had met in a hostel in Tokyo, to get to Kyoto as we planned to travel together for a week or so.

Most of the day was spent shrine hopping and exploring the Gion area. First I went to the Yasaka shrine which took a few hours to walk around as there is so much to see, especially as I found myself hiking way up through the forest behind where I got an amazing view of the area.

Next I went to the Kennin-ji temple, its also in a nice area but not so much to see there so I continued looking around Gion and had lunch.

I went back to the hostel and met Stijn at about 16:00 and he suggested we go and walk along the philosopher's path which goes along a canal and is supposed to be very beautiful. Unfortunately we got a bit lost, it got dark at about 18:00 and we were still trying to find it. At one point we found ourselves walking through a cemetery and had to use the torches on our phones to find our way out! For some reason we persisted and with the help of a taxi driver we found the philosopher's path eventually - but it was too dark to properly appreciate.. never mind!

I checked my GPS track for the day and it seems I had walked just over 32 km.
